The campaign, stage by stage

Eight tribes, twelve stages each, ninety-six missions. Every briefing below is the game’s own text; every map is drawn from the actual mission data in the pack, not redrawn by hand.

How a stage is put together

The map

Each tribe has its own version of every stage — in the pack the map sits at index stage × 8 + tribe, so there are ninety-six separate maps, not twelve maps with different starting corners. They grow with the campaign: stage one is 48×48 tiles, the last stages are 256×176.

The opening picture

A full-screen painting with the briefing text on top. It depends only on the stage number, so all eight tribes see the same twelve pictures — the text over them is what differs.

The objective

Read straight out of the briefing header: gather food, build a certain number of buildings, wipe out a named tribe, capture a sanctuary, fetch the legendary weapon, or kill every dinosaur on the map.

The reward

On victory the game shows either a painting or a movie. Seven stages have movies (1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12) and seven have paintings (2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10); stages 7 and 8 have both, and stage 12 ends the campaign.

One thing the files give away: the ending picture is looked up per tribe, but all eight entries in the pack point at the same image. Whoever you play, the campaign ends on the same screen.

Tyrano

1 Lake Dream

The Tyrano, the Primitive Year 972

  • Acquire Food over 3,000 units

There were two mountains in the Jurassic Island whereas most islands had a mountain. And also there was a lake called Lake Dream between the mountains. After the severe conflicts between tribes, the Tyrano arrived on the Island and occupied some parts of the Lake. They had none in their hands, but beasts and dinosaurs were waiting for them there.

Where it leads. Stage one is the same for every tribe: gather three thousand food. Survive, in other words. The movie shows what this land lives on — what dies on it. Stage two is where the tribe first builds barracks and pens, turning "we eat" into "we can fight".

2 The Unit Creating Dinosaur

The Tyrano, the Primitive Year 974

  • Build three Barracks
  • Build three units creating Velociraptor

The Tyrano who inhabited the lakeside thought of building an advanced unit, and they started to build Food Storage to store food, and the unit, Velociraptor, to create and train them. They were skilled in hunting beasts and training the Velociraptor. The Tyrano were getting more advanced, but they didn't know that the Radumba had lived in their area.

3 Secure a Hunting Ground

The Tyrano, the Primitive Year 999

  • Terminate the Kanoose

The Tyrano wanted to expand their hunting ground and to get rid of other tribes from the Jurassic Island. They harbored an ambition for living on the Island as the leader, and built new units to train Velociraptor as well as Triceratops. Also the young Tyrano became Muscle Men enough to hunt and fight. They found other tribe living on the Island when they had hunted far away from their ground. The name of the tribe was the Kanoose, and they used magic strangely dressed like female. The Tyrano were going to attack them to command.

The movie marks not the victory but the fact that the tribe now has a warrior in it. Before this it had hunters. Stage four continues the same war, and there is no going back from it.

4 Fighting against the Kanoose

The Tyrano, the Primitive Year 1002

  • Terminate the Kanoose

At last the Tyrano had expanded their territorial possessions away from the Dream Lake, but they were attacked by the Kanoose in succession. They had a hard time to fight against the Kanoose's magic although they already had Diloposaurus to pour a harmful poison. As the Kanoose's attack were getting more persistent and skillful, they finally decided to look for the Kanoose's stronghold and destroyed it at once. But could they find and destroy the headquarters?

5 The Search for the Legendary Weapon

The Tyrano, the Primitive Year 1005

  • Acquire the Legendary Weapon

Utamasha, the greatest chief of the Tyrano, had died leaving a secret behind, but before his death, he had known that the legendary weapon was in the island. Some of Tyrano who had a confidence of Utamasha's word began to leave their village to look for the said weapon.

Where it leads. Stage five is named the same for every tribe: acquire the legendary weapon. Those weapons were left by the twelve tribes who lived here before. The movie does not show the object but what comes back into the world with it: a man literally arrives from where men are not supposed to walk. On stage six that weapon is used to take a neighbour's sanctuary — the first foreign capital to fall.

6 The Power of Moonlight Sword

The Tyrano, the Primitive Year 1124

  • Capture the Kanoose's Sanctuary

In receipt of Utamasha's dying wish, the Tyrano had finally found the legendary weapon in a mystical place. The weapon they had acquired was the Moonlight Sword. It produced an annihilating power that the Tyrano could hunt the beasts as well as the dinosaurs and defeat other tribes attacking them without difficulties. Upon returning to their village, they found their place totally-ruined by the Kanoose. They advanced on the Kanoose's village to take avenge on them.

7 The Revolt of Dinosaurs

The Tyrano, the Primitive Year 1240

  • Terminate all Dinosaurs

At last the Tyrano captured the Kanoose, and both tribes were harmonized gradually. When they went hunting, they divided equally whatever they hunted and lived together in peace. But, unluckily an accident happened. Dinosaurs which only appeared in a hunting ground, attack their village because there was not enough food. Many of them died and their buildings were destroyed. Besides some of Velociraptor and Triceratops who the Tyrano trained in earnest also died. Although each tribes repulsed revolt of dinosaurs , their young peoples got lost. This was called, "the worst era of the Jurassic Island".

What is on screen. The camera travels along the carcass of a dead dinosaur, tail to head, and stops on the jaws.

Where it leads. Stage seven is the dinosaur uprising, the only stage where the enemy is not a tribe. The animals went hungry and turned on everyone; the objective is to kill every last one. The movie sums it up drily: you won, and there is nothing here to look at. This is where the campaign changes scale — from here on it is blocs, alliances and total war, not squabbles with the neighbours.

8 The Dawning of Jurassic Island

The Tyrano, Primitive Year 1255

  • Capture the Romack's Sanctuary
  • Capture the Masai's Sanctuary

The Tyrano came to hold off the invasion of dinosaurs, and they tried to power over other tribes. But the Romack and the Masai did not want to be ruled, and so both tribes attacked the Tyrano. But in return the Tyrano fought to death to colonize both. Now the Tyrano's fighting-power was greatly increasing as they had participated in many battles. Especially, Velociraptor was suitable to lure the enemy out because their movement was very fast.

The idols are among the few things left of the earlier inhabitants; the light on them means an old place of power is working again, and one of the eight now owns it.

9 The Search for Food

The Tyrano, Primitive Year 1268

  • Terminate all the enemies

The Tyrano went to war with other tribes. The war was not to annihilate or harmonize the other tribes but to make them slaves. They tried to win back their honor. 12 War - To - Death

The Tyrano, Primitive Year 1399

  • Terminate all the enemies

It took hundred of years after the great confusion. Heroes of the Tyrano grew old or died, and a colony retrieved their capability. Therefore new war took place. The new generations broke out the war for revenge of their ancestor and to conquer the Jurassic Island. The second bloody war....

Map: 256×176 tiles · tribes at the start: 8 · wild animals: 294 · On victory: the ending screen ↓

0:36 — the ending: a sanctuary, a tyrannosaurus, a horned god, the gates open, people walk in — and the light takes them.
What happens here, and what it leads to

What is on screen, in order. A man walks down a dark stone hall towards a blue doorway — this is the sanctuary. Fire flares and a tyrannosaurus throws itself at him: the beast guards this place. Then the hall floods green and a horned god rises before a carved wall — red, muscular, ram-horned, fire in his hands. He spreads his arms and the heavy blue gates swing open. People walk into the hall — men, women, children, whole families. Broad ribbons of yellow and blue light come to meet them, pass through the crowd — and the people are gone. The last shots are an empty hall and the light slowly fading.

What it means. The game never explains it in words, but its own texts hold the answer. The horned one is Perox, god of darkness: he lost the war of the gods to Ether, was cast out, came down to the island in a changed shape and made a kingdom of those who feared him — that is how the Moospell began. The tyrannosaurus in the sanctuary is his watchman, which is why the first half of the movie is a fight to get in.

The second half is the bill coming due. For twelve stages the tribes fought over hunting grounds and over the legendary weapons left by those who lived here before them. In the finale someone comes to collect: the gates are opened not by a man but by a god, and it is not warriors who walk in but a whole people, children included. The light does not kill — it takes. The island is left empty, exactly as in the eleventh movie, and exactly as it was left by the twelve tribes before them.

One detail from the files that explains a lot. The ending picture is looked up per tribe, but all eight entries point at the same image: whoever you play, the campaign ends on this.

0:25 — a beam of light strikes the stone faces — the same idols as in the stage 2 painting.
What happens here, and what it leads to

What is on screen. Stone faces set in the ground, light spreading above them, then a white beam striking down into them and holding until the end.

Where it leads. Stage eight is the first with two objectives at once: take the sanctuaries of two tribes. By now the island is split into an east and a west, and the war has stopped being a neighbours' quarrel. The idols are among the few things left of the earlier inhabitants; the light on them means an old place of power is working again, and one of the eight now owns it.

What happens here, and what it leads to

What is on screen. An empty scorched plain, a green and red sky, a horned skull in the middle of it. The camera walks slowly up to it, and that is all.

Where it leads. Stage eleven is the last before the finale, and by then one tribe stands over the others. The movie shows the price: the land is empty. Then comes stage twelve, the year 1399, where it all starts again — "War-To-Death".
